How to use FaceTime to video-call your family

FaceTime lets you have a video call with someone who also has an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. It's built into your phone — no extra apps needed. Group calls with up to 32 people work too, so the whole family can join.

  1. Open the FaceTime app

Find the green icon with a video camera on it. It's usually on your Home Screen.

  2. Make sure you're signed in

The first time you open FaceTime, you'll be asked to sign in with your Apple ID (the same email and password you use for the App Store). If it asks, sign in.

  3. Tap "New FaceTime"

Tap the green "New FaceTime" button near the top of the screen.

  4. Type a name or phone number

Start typing the name of the person you want to call. If they're in your Contacts, their name will appear — tap to add them.

  5. Tap "FaceTime" for video, or the phone icon for audio only

Tap the green "FaceTime" button. Or, to make an audio-only call (no video), tap the phone icon next to it.

  6. Add more people to the call

While in a call, you can add more family members by tapping the "+" button at the top of the screen. Each person gets a tile on the screen so you can all see each other.
