Fake utility shutoff threats

These calls increase in winter (heat shutoff threats) and summer (AC shutoff threats) when the threat feels most serious. The 'representative' may know your real utility company name and threaten that a service crew is on the way. Real utilities give written notice weeks in advance, not phone calls demanding immediate payment.

Fake utility shutoff call

"This is the disconnection department of Pacific Gas & Electric. Your account is 60 days past due in the amount of $487. A crew is en route to your address to disconnect service within the next two hours. To prevent disconnection, you need to make a payment immediately. We can only accept payment via prepaid card today — please go to a CVS or Walgreens and purchase a $487 reload card."

What not to do

  • Do not pay any utility bill with a prepaid card, gift card, or wire transfer.
  • Do not give your account number or credit card to anyone who calls you about your utility bill.
  • Do not feel pressured by the 'crew on the way' threat — it's a scam tactic.

Safer next step

  • Hang up. Call your utility company directly using the number on your actual bill or their website.
  • Real utility companies send written notices weeks before any shutoff. They do not call demanding same-day payment.
  • If you're behind on a bill, your utility has hardship programs and payment plans — ask about them when you call.

Family discussion prompt

Practice this response: 'If I get a call about a utility shutoff, I say I'll call back and I look up the number on my actual bill. Real utilities will be happy to wait.'
