How to set up email on a new iPhone or iPad

Adding your email to a new iPhone or iPad takes just a couple of minutes. Most providers (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook, iCloud) can be added automatically without typing in server settings.

  1. Open the Settings app

Find the gray icon with gears on it on your Home Screen. Tap it.

  2. Tap "Mail"

Scroll down. You'll see "Mail" with a blue envelope icon. Tap it.

  3. Tap "Accounts"

Tap "Accounts" near the top of the page. You'll see any email accounts already set up.

  4. Tap "Add Account"

Tap "Add Account." You'll see a list of common email providers: iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook.com, and "Other."

  5. Tap your email provider

If your email address ends in @gmail.com, tap Google. If it's @yahoo.com, tap Yahoo. If it's @aol.com, tap AOL. If you don't see your provider, tap "Other."

  6. Sign in with your email address and password

A page will open where you can sign in. Type your full email address (like yourname@gmail.com), then tap Next and type your password. If you have two-factor authentication on, you'll get a code on your phone or in an app — type that code in when asked.

  7. Choose what to sync

After signing in, you'll see switches for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and Notes. Leave them all on if you want to use all of those, or turn off the ones you don't need. Tap "Save" in the top right corner.
